Thorns more prominent in her slumber
than the fruits of her labor.
Reminding me that perhaps
bouquets of resolutions
are not meant to bloom in January.
This year brought something else. Something that isn’t breaking only my heart, but breaking the world’s. While racing for survival, we are being forced to slow down and reconsider everything from our daily tasks to our deepest fears.
Hanging this amendment over our schools
and the bodies of our children.
Like the American flag
over a casket
as if it protects them.
